Imitation gold bosses are attached to the outside to support bolts on the inner side for the handles of the shield. The teaching of the art of Gatka dates back to the times of the Sikh Gurus, in the 15th century, techniques that have been handed down to the current generation by an unbroken lineage of masters. The fighting technique was used in historical Sikh wars, but is also considered to be a spiritual as well as physical practice due to the idea that it originates from the need to defend righteousness yet at the same time, the unification of miri piri (spirit and body).
