Over 20 million of the 30 million residents are involved in agriculture and wheat is the main commodity.Over the past two years, more than 900 Punjabi farmers have killed themselves, and the state has the highest rates of cancer in India. \n \nA government survey estimates that more than two-thirds of households have at least one drug addict in the family. Farmers take opium husk, known as “bhuki”, which helps to kill the appetite, enabling them to work for longer in the fields. A recent survey shows as many as 89 per cent of Punjab farm households are reeling under debt. The government has, for years and decades, been shifting Punjab’s waters away from the state. Recent bills passed by the parliament further aim to make the bad situation worse. \n \n
